
Blacks from the Northern
States sought freedom as a result of the re-enforcement of the Ohio
Black Laws
in 1829. Hearing of the establishment
of the Wilberforce Settlement north of London some settled here
amongst the sympathetic Quakers.
Guided Tour- African Methodist
Episcopal Cemetery, Otterville, dating from 1856 and restored in 2007, marking over 200 graves and the church site.
The display at the Grand Trunk Station Museum, depicts the development of this Black Settlement, the lives of some of the settlers and distinguished descendants such as Ray Lewis, first Canadian-born Black to receive an Olympic Medal; plus exciting connections to Harriet Tubman and the Underground Railroad movement.
